On September 15, Georgian fighter Merab Dvalishvili claimed the UFC lightweight championship, defeating American Sean O’Malley by unanimous decision.
Merab Dvalishvili is now joined by former featherweight champion Aljamain Sterling, a long-time friend who had previously prevented Dvalishvili from competing for the belt. Both fighters have pledged to never face each other in the octagon.
Aljamain Sterling took to social media to congratulate Dvalishvili, stating that the sub-lightweight division now has a new champion in the name of Merab Dvalishvili.
Let’s recall the first meeting between Merab Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling, which Merab himself spoke about.
“Years ago, when I was an undefeated amateur fighter, the coach allowed me to spar with Aljo, he beat me twice in 5 minutes… He made me a humble person, I analyzed that daily work is necessary to achieve a great goal, he was my inspiration to become a better fighter and person, I am proud to call him my brother today,” said Merab Dvalishvili about Aljamain Sterling.
Men whose friendship remained unshakable despite immense pressure. They stayed together through it all and achieved great victories as a team.
