Italian runner Valentina Petrillo will be the first transgender woman to compete at the Paris Paralympics.
The 50-year-old athlete will take part in 200 and 400 meters.
Petrilo changed gender in 2019. Athlete has vision problems. Last year won bronze medals at the World Championships in running. Petrillo won 11 national awards in the men’s team before changing the gender.
As the chairman of the International Paralympic Committee Andrew Parsons said, although they do not have a problem with Petrillo in Paris, she wants the sports world to develop a unified position in relation to transgender people.
The Paris Paralympic Games will be held from August 28 to September 8.
